The Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA) provides duty-free access for Caribbean and Central American products entering U.S. markets. This paper compares the performance of traditional agricultural exports (beef, bananas, coffee, sugar and tobacco products) and nontraditional exports (pineapples, melons, fresh citrus, frozen orange juice and vegetables) under the CBERA. The decline in the value of traditional agricultural exports exceeded the gains in nontraditional exports by 400 percent. Tariffs and a limited range of duty-free goods still constrain CBERA’s development potential despite gains under the amended legislation. |

Three batches of rabbits were immunized against 2 strains of Vibrio anguillarum (Va V 62 and Va V 408), which cause vibriosis in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L. 1758) Serranidae. Homologous and heterologous reactions were obtained against these Vibrio strains and other bacteria using an improved indirect ELISA technique. Antibody and antigen titrations revealed high immunogenecity (high antibody titers for the antisera) of the 2 Vibrio strains. They correspond to serotype I and show close affinity. The specificity and sensitivity of 1 selected antiserum were tested on brain extracts from healthy sea bass and those infected artificially with V. anguillarum serotypes I and III. Preliminary results confirm the reliability of the technique and warrant its... |

The larval stage is regarded to be the main bottleneck of halibut production. Halibut eggs were obtained from captive broodstock both by stripping and by natural spawning. Artificial photoperiods were used to increase the total spawning season. Yolk sac larvae are presently produced either in small stagnant units or in large flow through systems. A major consideration is to avoid stress of the larvae, caused by mechanical disturbances of the larvae and by high bacterial load or high ammonia levels in the water. The experimentation showed that halibut larvae began to ingest algae earlier than rotifers Brachionus sp. Supplementation of algae to first feeding tanks resulted in enhanced survival and growth rate of the larvae. Both rotifers... |

Tanzania is very rich in wetland resources which include the Great Lake systems, major rivernetworks and deltaic mangroves. The major lakes and floodplains have long provided afertile resource base as they include alluvial plains of great agricultural potential. Wetlands in Tanzania support an extensive trading and transport system, fishing grounds,agro-pastoral activities, hydrological processes and, more recently, the harnessing of the riverflows for irrigation and hydroelectric power. |

The Mediterranean sea is an area which has a longlived oceanographic tradition. Since the remote antiquity, it has been the object of observations and descriptions in which maritime activities and fishing hold a paramount place, This paper presents a synthetic view on the history of the fisheries research and its evolution in the area. The very rich mediterranean fauna and the highly multispecific nature of the catches certainly favoured the fact that the first works were mainly oriented towards attempts of exhaustive descriptions of the vital cycles and biological parameters of a given species. The passage from marine biology sensu-stricto to fisheries research is relatively recent in the Mediterranean, the first attempts to apply some mathematical... |

An overview of the wet deposition of micropollutants (trace metals -Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Zn- and organic compounds -PAHs, PCBs, pesticides) to the North Sea and adjacent areas is presented. The results of (in)direct measurements of the wet flux are compared to modeling results. Attention is given to specific problems like revolatilization, sea-spray, contamination, gas-to-particle ratios in wet deposition of Hg and the organic substances. Also, the importance of wet deposition is weighted to that of dry deposition and non-atmospheric input routes to the North Sea. It is concluded that -especially for organic micropollutants- current knowledge is insufficient to yield an accurate and detailed image of the impact and importance of wet deposition to the North... |
